Build that knowledge one snowball at a time!
I’m a big fan of listening to resources for learning, and podcasts are a fun and engaging way to do so while making you feel part of a larger community.
Audiobooks are also a great option. If you’re like me and enjoy mixing in a longer book here and there between shorter podcasts, check out my post on the Best Books About Personal Finance.
Top three podcasts
Listed in alphabetical order:
1. Afford Anything: Paula Pant is the producer. She comes with a real estate investing bias and even has her own class with how to get involved. I enjoy her banter with her co-host, but find her perspective usually the most in line with mine. Her cohost has his own podcast and sometimes acts as thoughtful he knows more than Paula. I think the tension works for them as I find myself rooting for Paula to talk him into her way of thinking. Ultimately it’s nice to hear two flip sides of a coin. (Sorry, pun intended) Her tagline is a basic but good reminder that you can afford anything but you can’t afford everything.
2. Earn and Invest: I think this is the one I’ve listened to the most. I really enjoy the host Doc G’s personality and his choice of folks to interview. He’s a really skilled interviewer. He does a great job of making the guests the star of the show by asking thoughtful questions. Many if the episodes have lead me down paths of researching tangential topics.
3. Rich and Regular: If you’re just dipping your toe into personal finance and learning the basics, I highly recommend this husband and wife duo who are down to earth and relatable. Julien and Kiersten Saunders break down budgeting and explain financial jargon that can be overwhelming for us newbies. They also have a YouTube channel.
Others I like to add into the mix include:
All the Hacks: Chris Hutchins is the host who interviews other knowledgeable folks about subjects ranging from taxes to travel to phone plans. Literally anything! I appreciate the range of topics to help put me in a savings mindset beyond the usual route.
Catching up to FI: FI stands for financial independence. This podcast is for folks late to the game in saving for retirement (hence no RE for retire early, for those of you familiar with the term FIRE). The hosts are also late bloomers who share their experiences to bring hope to the rest of us!
Optimal Finance Daily: Short sound bites that take large subjects or topics and digest them down into small summaries. Great for folks with limited attention spans or time.
Rebel Entrepreneur: A charismatic Brit who is as witty as he is wise. Check out his free courses on entrepreneurship as well!

Podcast that I abandoned but plan on giving another try:
Risk Parity Radio: A peer recommended this podcast, using it to build their education on portfolio construction. They recommended to start on episode 1 as well as some of the early “foundational” episodes, like episodes 14 and 16 on bonds. The podcast’s purpose is creating portfolios to live off of that can get higher safe withdrawal rates than the standard 4%. They said there’s a lot of great info about different asset classes and their roles in a portfolio. I was glad to hear someone else enjoyed listening to this since I initially found it too technical to keep my attention, however, I was just starting out at the time. Now that I know more, I’ll give it a try!
