After your three months of spending and accruing points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card, it’s time to put it away and open a new one to accrue more credit card sign up points!
But you might be thinking, why would I do that when I earn 3 points for every dollar spent on groceries? Because this path is faster than earning from regular spending.
This post is about utilizing the help of others. If you’re not able or interested, jump to the next post of which credit card to open next on your own.
Share a Referral Link
To create a referral link , go to https://www.chase.com/referafriend/. Fill out the info to receive a link.
Once a friend or partner signs up using your link, you will receive 15,000 points.
Before you get too excited, there is a limit of 100k points/year from referrals, don’t download Ticktock and try to become an influencer thinking you’ll get endless points. 😉 After 7 friends, only your friend benefits.
Recruit a Partner
This is especially helpful if you’re a two partner household and share expenses. The points, once earned, can be transferred to you.
Open A Chase Sapphire Preferred in Your Partner’s Name
Remember when I said don’t pick the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card? Well, if for some reason you wish you had chosen it, now’s your time to review options and refer your partner/spouse!
Your partner will qualify and if you want to go that route, if you refer them, you will get still get a 15k referral bonus as well.
If you don’t want to go the fancy/expensive Chase Sapphire Reserve route, ask your partner to open the same Chase Sapphire Preferred via your referral link. Your partner will then make similar purchases that were made the prior three months to meet the sign on bonus.
It’s as easy as that!
To Review
After this step you will have accrued the following amount of points after 6 months:
75k elevated sign up bonus points (or 60k regular sign up bonus) in your name
+
Possible 75k elevated sign up bonus points (or 60k regular) in your partner’s name
+
15k referral bonus
=
Minimum of 135k with regular sign up bonuses.
or
165k with elevated sign up bonuses!
Observations
My first referral occurred Jan 15. I was surprised to learn these points will not show up for my use until the next billing cycle. There was no indication that someone used my referral, so I was worried I did something wrong. Hopefully you find this a relief to know!
After receiving my referral bonus and my parter’s points that he transferred to me, I personally had 200,000 points available for use.
By April, I was able to purchase a ticket to a Bali retreat for one person with 121,000 points transferred to United Airlines!
